Finnish American Reporter October 2026 | Obituary: John Bispala

With gratitude for a life rich in faith, family, music, and service, we celebrate the life of Rev. John Bispala. Born on April 11, 1938, in Hibbing, Minnesota, to John Bispala Sr. and Elsie Frantsi Bispala, John was raised in the close-knit Finnish-American community of Minnesota's Iron Range. John spent his childhood surrounded by family, faith, and the traditions that would shape the course of his life.

As a young man, Pastor John discovered his calling to ministry while attending Bible camp. Inspired by his growing faith and deep interest in his Finnish heritage, he attended Suomi College in Hancock, Michigan. He later completed his bachelor's degree at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, studying Hebrew and Greek before earning his Master of Divinity at the Lutheran School of Theology in Illinois. John's lifelong love of Finland led him to study theology there in 1964; that experience made him into a strong theologian and expert on varieties of Finnish Lutheranism.

It was in Finland that he met the love of his life, Kaija. They were married on June 5, 1965, beginning a partnership that would span six decades of devotion, faith and mutual support. Together they raised two children, Karen (Youssou Ba) and Mark, and were later blessed with three beloved grandchildren, Aisha (Camaray Rouse), Ami, and Seydi.

Pastor John served small congregations in Ohio and North Dakota, including preaching in Finnish. He believed pastors should know their people and made personal connections the hallmark of his ministry. Every week, he visited parishioners in their homes, hospitals and nursing facilities, carrying his small black communion kit and his accordion to play and sing hymns. His mantra came from one of his Finnish theology teachers, 'If your parishioners see you during the week, you will see them at church on Sunday.' His main emphasis in his sermons was always about the gospel of Jesus — God's saving grace supersedes any human decision or action.

As a leader of a congregation, Pastor John felt a responsibility to speak out for social justice and civil rights. Teaching the younger generation about faith and respect for all people was one of the main messages of his ministry. This was not always a popular message during the 1970s and '80s, so it took a lot of courage and Finnish sisu to stick with it.

Outside the pulpit, John's curiosity and creativity knew few limits. He was a skilled amateur radio operator, electronic technician, handyman, writer about social issues, salesman and a proud Camden News board member. Music was among his greatest joys. He mastered the accordion, specializing in classical and Finnish music, and produced professional-quality recordings. Family gatherings were rarely complete without the sound of his accordion. Many will remember his spirited performances of U.S. patriotic songs and his beloved rendition of Finland's freedom song, "Säkkijärven Polkka."

Above all, John was devoted to his family. He remained deeply connected to his Finnish roots, finding extended kin in Finland and preserving the stories of the Bispala and Frantsi families for future generations. He was a loving husband who proudly supported and celebrated his wife's accomplishments as a nurse. His children remember a dedicated father integrating them into his church life and prioritizing academic achievement. His grandchildren's fond memories are of grandpa's deep dinner conversations interweaving Lutheran theology, history, and social issues. His steady presence, thoughtful guidance, humble spirit, and unwavering willingness to help others is a legacy he passed through the generations.

Rev. John Bispala leaves behind a legacy of faith, music, scholarship, service, and love. His life touched parishioners, musicians, friends, and family members across generations and continents. Though he will be deeply missed, his songs, teachings, faith, and example continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew him.
